Solving Percent Problems

Is Over Of Equals Percent Over 100
or
Part Over Whole Equals Percent Over 100
Helps us solve percent problems

45% of what is 9?

9  =  45
x     100
(9 times 100 ) divided by 45
x = 20

What is 35% of 80?
x  =  35
80   100
(80 times 35) divided by 100
x =28

What is a 20% tip of $30
tip  =   20
30      100
(30 times 20) divided by 100
Tip = $6

There are 15 girls in the class. That is 75 percent of the students.
How many students are in the class.
15  =  75
x     100
(15 times 100) divided by 75
There are 20 students in the class

How many boys are in the class?
20 subtract 15 = 5 boys

Percents and Fractions

Fractions, Ratios, Decimals, and Percents are ALL related

Take the Percent and Write it over 100 to make a fraction

Proportions and Unit Rates

A proportion is 2 equal ratios

***To find an equal proportion use Cross-Multiplication

X = 7 times 9 divided by 4  = $15.75
__
? = 11 times 500 divided by 100 = 55
__

N = 1 times 8 divided by 2 = 4
__

Are the two proportions equal??????
Check by using Cross- Multiplication

Yes, they are.

Equivalent Ratios

We can use Ratio Tables to help us find equivalent ratios!!!!

Use tables to solve equivalent ratios by adding and subtracting or multiply and dividing!

For every 1 green, you have 3 reds
For every 2 greens, you have 6 reds
For every 3 greens, you have 9 reds
For every 4 greens, you have 12 reds
For every 5 greens, you have 15 reds
For every 6 greens, you have 18 reds
For every 10 greens, you have 30 reds

__

1 times $9 = $9
2 times $9 = $18
3 times $9 = $27
4 times $9 = $36

There are 4 blue dots to five orange dots
or
4 : 5
or
4 to 5
---

There are five boys to every three girls
5 to 3
5 : 3
NOTICE THE ORDER..... IT ASKED FOR BOYS FIRST
ORDER DOES MATTER
---

There is 1 green star for every 3 red stars
1 : 3
1 to 3
There are 3 green stars compared to the whole
3 to 4
3:4
