Back to School- Frequently Asked Questions and Answers

Back to School Night: August 7th 5:00 - 7:00 pm
Come meet your teachers and enjoy a hot dog!

What supplies do our students need? In 6th grade, teachers cannot require students to bring supplies, so we supply all needed materials.  The only item your student needs is a pencil.  Please note, that we need DONATIONS to keep our classrooms functioning. The items that we need are: Kleenex, pencils, erasers, dry erase markers, pens, white 1 inch binders, and lined paper.  Anything you can donate is very much appreciated.

How do you read the schedule? There are eight periods during the school day.  Math, Language Arts, and Science each consist of two periods.  Students will stay in class with their teacher for the entire 86 minutes.  This gives each core teacher an opportunity to teach, check for understanding, practice, and reteach during the same class period.

Who is the disclosure for? The disclosure covers the curriculum and policies in Miss Allen and Miss Shaw's class.

When is the disclosure due? The disclosure should be signed and returned to Miss Allen by August 21, 2014.

What lunch do we have? We have second lunch.

What time is lunch? Lunch is from 12:07-12:32

How do you pay lunch money? Lunch money can be paid on myschoolfees.com.  If you would like to send lunch money to school with your student, they will be sent to the lunch secretary during the end of second period.

How do we know what bus our student rides? There is a list located in the commons, or you can check on the Washington County School District Website.  Go to washk12.org – click on parents and students-- Click on boundaries and transportation

My student excels or needs additional help? Our classrooms have built in differentiation to meet all student’s needs.  Those students who are gifted or talented, or who have a learning disability are all learning at their individual levels within the regular education classroom.

Is there a lot of homework? Due to the schedule, core teachers rarely send home any homework.  Homework is built in to the classroom schedule, so we can quickly check for understanding of every concept.  Reading logs are to be completed at home; also, students should be studying vocabulary at home. Math has one weekly assignment due every Sunday on Schoology. Math concepts are sent home in a weekly email, please check for student understanding.  Extra assignments are sent home via weekly emails, if you would like to have your child demonstrate their level of understanding.

Who and what is the team of teachers for my student? At Tonaquint, we have an internal structure focused on students needs.  Each student is assigned to a Team.  The team in comprised of: the language arts teacher, math teacher, social studies teacher, fine arts teacher, counselor, and an administrator.  The team shares the same ninety students.  Each week, the team meets to discuss individual students needs and team needs.  This is a great way to meet the needs of our students and to be able to communicate across departments to ensure the best education for your students.

What is remediation and who attends remediation? To ensure student learning, we participate in what is called Remediation Friday’s.  In math, every Thursday each student will take a quiz or a chapter test.  If students receive below 70%, they will be sent to remediation on Friday.  For remediation, the student is sent to another room where a license math teacher will reteach the week’s concepts.  They will be retested to check for understanding before returning to the classroom.  This is a great opportunity for your students. In Language Arts, students who have below a 70% will also be sent to remediation.  For both math and language arts, while the remediation students are out of the classroom, they are NOT missing further instruction.  In the classroom the teacher is focused on extending this week’s concepts.  We are focusing on increasing the depth of understanding and application to real-world situations.

How are parents contacted by teachers? Please make sure you have a current email address and telephone number on file.  You can update this information in PowerSchool.  On Mondays, we send out weekly emails so you will know what is happening in our classrooms.  The emails are sent to the emails in PowerSchool.  If we have an individual student need, parents will be notified via phone calls.

If you have any questions, comments, concerns, special needs, PLEASE contact us.  You can send us an email  or call us.
